Retzius-Sparing Robotic Radical Prostatectomy
As part of his commitment to delivering world-class surgical care, Associate Professor Troy Gianduzzo offers Retzius-Sparing Robotic Radical Prostatectomy (RSP), an advanced, anatomical refinement to traditional robotic prostate surgery. A/Prof Gianduzzo co-authored and published the first major Australian clinical series evaluating the technique in BJUI Compass:
Retzius-Sparing Radical Prostatectomy: First 200 Australian Cases
Why the Retzius-Sparing Technique Matters
Traditional robotic prostatectomy approaches the prostate from the front, entering the "space of Retzius" and disrupting natural supportive tissues. The Retzius-sparing approach accesses the prostate from behind (posterior approach), keeping key anatomical structures completely intact.
- Preserves Natural Anatomy: Leaves critical supportive structures, including the puboprostatic ligaments, endopelvic fascia, and bladder neck support, undisturbed.
- Potentially Earlier Return of Continence: Clinical findings show that preserving these natural support mechanisms leads to a significantly faster regain of urinary control, with many patients achieving pad-free status in the early weeks following surgery.
- Refined Surgical Precision: Combines high-definition 3D robotic visualization with minimal disruption to surrounding pelvic tissues.
